Introduction

Welcome to the Canning Stock Route (CSR) visitor permit system. This system is for people wishing to travel the sections of the CSR between Wells 5-51 for tourism and/or sightseeing purposes only.

For access to the CSR for these sections for any other purpose (e.g. research, mining, exploration, prospecting) or for access to any other areas on surrounding lands (apart from approved access roads) please contact the relevant native title organisations.

Please note that general public access is not readily granted and that government approvals may be required for activities other than tourism. The system has been designed to minimise the administration cost of permits so that a maximum percentage of your permit fee can be committed to looking after the important environmental and cultural values of the land through which the CSR runs. This is achieved through enabling automatic approval of applications that meet criteria for typical sightseeing trips along the CSR.

All travellers on the CSR enter and travel the CSR at their own risk. You should ensure that you are adequately prepared.

Making an application

The system will guide you through your application with the use of help text and will prompt you for any mandatory information before moving to the next page. The system will take you through 3 stages

  • Application
  • Confirmation and approval
  • Payment

If you make a mistake or want to change any information in your application, you can do so anytime up until you make payment for the permit. Once you have confirmed the details in your application it is stored in the system and you can retrieve and edit your permit at any time prior to payment.

The help text in the Trip plan section provides a guide to the 'rules' for a typical sightseeing trip. If your trip plan is outside of these 'rules' then your application will need to be manually assessed. This may cause a delay in issuing your permit as your application may need to be referred to the relevant native title organisations for their approval.

There is a text box on the 'confirm' page that allows you to enter information in support of your application that will be considered by CSR staff and/or native title organisations in the event that it requires manual assessment.

Issue of permit

A permit will only be issued once it has been paid for. It is valid for the vehicle, number of persons, period and any conditions indicated on the permit. The standard permit fees for the CSR sections covered by this system are:

  • $295.00 for a non-commercial (private) light vehicle (e.g. Toyota Landcruiser, Nissan Patrol, Landrover Defender, motorbike). These are the recommended mode of transport for the Stock Route.
  • $575.00 for a non-commercial heavy (private) vehicle (e.g. Oka, Mitsubishi Canter 4WD). These are not recommended for the Stock Route due to concerns for safety, the environment and track conditions. Please note that these vehicles may not be allowed on some pastoral properties through which you access the Stock Route. You will need to check with the pastoral manager if you wish to access these properties (see contact details). Feedback from other travellers will be monitored for future decisions on these types of vehicles.
  • $485.00 for a commercial permit. Commercial permits are for commercial operators - someone who receives payment to take customers along the Canning Stock Route.
    • For all-inclusive operators, the commercial permit rate applies per vehicle, per trip.
    • For tag-along operators the commercial permit is required for the tour lead vehicle (the person receiving income for leading the tour). Each tag-along vehicle in the tour (paying customer) is required to have a non-commercial (private) light vehicle permit.
  • $150.00 for a cyclist or trekker. Bicycle travel and trekking on the CSR without the use of a support vehicle is not recommended due to harsh and difficult terrain. Permits for cyclists and trekkers do not meet the criteria for automatic permit issue and will be referred for manual assessment. A separate permit is required for each support vehicle (see above).
  • $150.00 additional fee for trailers. Trailers are not recommended for the Stock Route due to concerns for the environment and for track conditions as well as for their potential for break down*. Please note that trailers may not be allowed on some pastoral properties through which you access the Stock Route, or they may be additional charges for access through these properties. You will need to check with the pastoral manager if you wish to access these properties (see contact details).

All automated payments are processed via the PayPal service. You do not require a PayPal account to use this service, just an accepted credit or debit card.

Your permit will serve as a tax receipt, as well as being a permit to travel the CSR. Please make sure that the information that you enter in your application is correct before you proceed to payment as details can only be changed by contacting the system administrator once you have paid for your permit.

Refunds

Permit fees will only be refunded if you advise us that the trip has had to be cancelled prior to entry to the CSR due to circumstances beyond your control. Applications for refunds can be made via kujuwangka@outlook.com by quoting your 6-character permit code. A small service charge ($11 including GST) will apply to processing of all refunds.

CSR staff would welcome any feedback on the permit system. We will be undertaking periodic reviews of the system and any feedback received will be considered at this time.
